Hiring in Banking: Skills Tests for Front-Office, Operations and Compliance Roles

Banks hire constantly: branch staff, call-centre agents, operations specialists, credit analysts, compliance officers and IT. Many vacancies attract hundreds of applicants, and many candidates look identical on paper. Meanwhile the cost of a wrong hire is high. Mistakes in banking cost money, damage customer trust and can create regulatory exposure.

Skills tests help banks screen large applicant pools quickly and consistently, and document why someone was selected.

Why traditional screening struggles in banks

  • Volume: a single call-centre or branch campaign can bring in hundreds of CVs.
  • Similar profiles: graduates of the same universities with the same degrees.
  • Inconsistent interviews: different branch managers judge differently.
  • Audit expectations: HR increasingly needs to show that selection was objective and job-related.

A standard, job-relevant test for each role solves most of these at once.

Suggested assessments by role

RoleWhat to testExample tests
Branch / front office (teller, customer advisor)Accuracy with numbers, customer service judgement, communicationCritical thinking (express), customer service scenarios, numerical accuracy, 1–2 video questions
Call centre / contact centreListening, empathy, problem solving, language skillsCustomer support L1 scenarios, language test, video question
Operations / back officeAttention to detail, Excel, process disciplineExcel core skills, critical thinking, accuracy tasks
Credit / risk analystFinancial analysis, data interpretation, ExcelAccounting/finance test, Excel intermediate, data literacy
Compliance / AMLRules application, judgement, written precisionBanking & compliance tests, critical thinking (standard), short essay case
IT and dataCoding, SQL, systems knowledgeCoding tasks, SQL fundamentals, 1C or other system tests where relevant

Example: a teller assessment in 30 minutes

  1. Critical thinking, express (10 min): reasoning with rules and numbers.
  2. Customer service scenarios (10 min): a customer disputing a fee, an elderly customer confused by the mobile app.
  3. Numerical accuracy (5 min): cash counting and currency conversions.
  4. One video question (3 min): "A customer insists on a transaction that breaks bank policy. What do you say?"

Every candidate for the role gets the same assessment, the same time and the same scoring. Branch managers then interview only the top group.

Add your own bank-specific questions

Library tests cover general skills, but every bank has its own products, procedures and regulations. Add 10–15 custom questions on:

  • your products and tariffs (for front-office roles)
  • internal procedures and escalation rules
  • local regulations relevant to the role

In TheyTest you can write these questions yourself or upload them in bulk from an Excel file, and then reuse them across every campaign.

Integrity matters even more in banking

A bank can't afford a hire who cheated their way in. Look for:

  • randomised questions drawn from a pool
  • time limits per test
  • monitoring of tab switching, copy-paste and leaving full-screen
  • a full session recording (with the candidate's consent) that HR can review
  • a clear risk grade for each candidate

Graduate and internship programmes

Many banks run annual graduate programmes with large applicant numbers. A short online assessment of critical thinking, Excel core skills, a language test and one video question lets you rank hundreds of applicants fairly before assessment-centre days. That saves the expensive in-person stage for the strongest candidates.

Measuring the impact

Track a few numbers before and after introducing tests:

  • time from application to offer
  • interview-to-offer ratio
  • 90-day and 12-month retention
  • manager rating of new hires after probation

If test scores and later performance line up, you know the assessment is working. If they don't, adjust which tests you use.

Banks already using skills-based hiring

Banks and financial institutions in Azerbaijan already use TheyTest to screen candidates. The platform works in Azerbaijani, Russian, English, Turkish, Uzbek, Kazakh, Georgian and more, and its library includes a Banking, Compliance & Accounting category as well as 1C tests.

FAQ

Which tests are most useful for bank tellers?

A short critical thinking or numerical test, customer service scenarios and one video question. Together they cover accuracy, judgement and communication in about 30 minutes.

Can we use our own internal procedures as test questions?

Yes. Create a custom test with your own questions, upload them in bulk from Excel and reuse them across campaigns.

Is online testing acceptable for regulated roles?

Yes, provided the tests are job-related, applied consistently and handled under data-protection rules. A full session recording and documented scoring also make the selection easier to justify in an audit.
